We thrive on variety with a flexible approach to defining, analysing and solving technical and commercial problems.

Whether your products are cutting edge materials or designs, or your project aims to preserve ancient structures sensitively, we can help.

We listen to your priorities outside the engineering challenge – whether it be price, timescale, report size, confidentiality. We make it our mission to move heaven and earth to achieve your priorities.

Unlike many other engineering design companies, we track our Key Performance Indicators. Here are some of our metrics: Cost, Dependability, Reliability, Quality and Speed.

We use videoconferencing, telephone and email communications channels to work from our Isle of Wight base.
While we can easily work with local marine, renewables and construction businesses, these modern technologies mean we can also support national and European businesses. However, 3D scanning large items will usually require a site visit.

About Gordon Mucklow, Managing Director

Gordon Mucklow, MEng

Gordon Mucklow, MEng

I qualified with a MEng Degree from Exeter University in 1997, on the first year accredited as meeting the IMechE requirements for a taught Masters Degree course.

The 4 year Mechanical Engineering degree course had the first two years common to Civil, Electrical and Chemical Engineering courses, ensuring a thorough grounding in all aspects of Engineering disciplines. A third year individual ERASMUS project and study in France, and a final year group project followed equipping me well for both teamwork and the motivation to work alone.

Since then I have international experience of work in local SMEs and multi-nationals working in metals and composites, ranging from manufacturers through logistics to specialist naval architects. Having been to Australia, South Africa, America and around Europe, I met many cultures and I have the basics of French and German languages.

I have used computer-aided inspection, modelling, analysis and optimisation methods for one-off restoration projects, for component optimisation in high-stress environments like Formula1 racing cars and racing yachts, and for quality assurance in mass production.

Now at Adaptive Engineering Solutions Ltd
I manage high-value engineering design projects aiming to deliver both engineering and commercial benefits on materials including metals, plastics and composites, in various industry sectors:

1. Marine – eg extending the life of underwater seals to reduce replacement & downtime costs

2. Renewable Energies – eg turbine blade weight:strength ratio improvement

3. Construction – eg one-off lissted building restoration steels spatial optimisation

4. Transport – eg quality assurance comparison scans for Formula1 racing cars

5. Aerospace – eg scanning Leading Edge fittings to qualify manufacturing process change

6. Defence – eg confidential, no examples available (please contact us directly about your project).

I am highly motivated by trailblasing projects.
I enjoy seeking solutions to problems never tackled before. Analysing and modelling by computer allows us to find new answers and better answers – faster and with much more confidence than trial-and-error methods.

I can set my team to go well beyond traditional engineering techniques and help you:

  • Save time, save money, reduce risks, reduce variance, raise quality and reliability in your manufacturing processes

  • Extend lifetime, improve fit, reduce weight, increase strength, ease assembly for your products

  • Gain marketing advantages: better warranty, best certification, justifying pricing, reduced returns/replacements

Also, I have a commitment to 'reduce-reuse-recycle' purposes and enjoy supporting these aims.

And in the current circumstances, I have great sympathy for engineers needing fast-turnaround results – many projects subject to contractual deadlines have been delayed by lock-down and have become urgent.

Even if you can't immediately see what you were hoping for on this website, please do get in touch to discuss how we can put together the right approach to make your project happen.

"I'm sure I can get you a better design to boost your results!"
Gordon Mucklow, MD

About Jeff Watson, Senior Engineer

Following a four-year technical apprenticeship at the British Hovercraft Corp. (BHC), I became a design draughtsman at the renamed BHC, now Westland Aerospace in the early 1980's.

Further to my apprenticeship, I attended the Isle of Wight College of Arts & Technology in 1983, on a day-release basis, to study for an HNC in Mechanical & Production Engineering. In the following 16 years or so I worked on numerous contracts mainly as a stress engineer these included; EH101, McDonnell Douglas, Dornier, Saab and de Havilland.

Other technical training has included courses on various subject such as stress analysis, MSC Linear, statics & normal modes, FEMAP, Hypermesh 7 & Abaqus non-linear & composites. Becoming an FEM specialist with the newly taken over Westland Aerospace, GKN Aerospace in 1998, I was able to work on another wide variety of contracts until 2017 when I applied for a post with Adaptive Engineering Solutions.

The move to AES in early 2018 has been a positive one where I now work in a very supportive, friendly environment with many training and development opportunities. Employees are kept abreast of company progress and plans with regular 'team building' events. AES consistently deliver on their commitments & promises to both employees and customers alike.

About Tracy Rackett, Office Manager

Working at AES has allowed me to utilise my 40 years of extensive administrative experience gained through working in a wide diversity of roles in office & project management, customer services, purchasing and personnel in manufacturing, health and education sectors.

Not having the chance to go to university, I have taken every opportunity offered to me to further my education through day release courses and in-house training etc. My qualifications range from 'O' levels, HNC in Business & Finance, certificates in personnel practice and supervisory management etc. Even at my great age, I am always willing to learn new skills and working practices. I can respond to changing priorities and pressures of work.

I think that my life skills and work experiences have helped me to become the well-rounded, competent and motivated employee that I am today. The management of AES appreciate my ability to be well organised, proactive and able to generate ideas & solutions and to generally support the work of our engineering team who are all of the same mind set.

In 40 years of working, I can honestly say that I have never been made to feel such a valuable and appreciated member of the team. The care and attention to well-being of employees is reflected in the way that we deal with our customers.
