Ideal Protein Alternative Diet Plan
Ideal Protein Phase 1 or Weight Loss Phase is where you would lose most of the weight.
While the keto diet craze is a recent phenomenon, the Ideal Protein Protocol was created almost 30 years ago by Dr. Tran Tien Chanh and Olivier Benloulou. Dr. Chanh, a French physician, was looking to create a safer and easier weight loss protocol for his patients. At the time, his focus was on athletes needing to drop weight quickly but maintain function and performance.
Initially, the Ideal Protein protocol consisted of 4 phases with Phase 1 being the step where you would lose most of the weight. There have been a few changes in the last few years. Now, you will go through 3 phases of the Ideal Protein protocol:
- Phase 1 or weight loss phase
- Phase 2 or stabilization phase and lastly
- Phase 3 or maintenance phase
This article will give you an insight into Phase 1 of the Ideal Protein diet. We will also look into the Ideal Protein allowed food list, Ideal Protein supplements, Ideal Protein Phase 1 recipes, and more.
How Ideal Protein Makes a Difference?
At the time, the ketogenic diet was relatively unheard of, outside of the Atkins diet which was gaining popularity. Similar to the Atkins diet, Ideal Protein also takes out simple and complex carbohydrates from the diet to put your body into ketosis, a biochemical state that forces the body to burn stored fat rather than the carbohydrates you consume.
What makes Ideal protein different from Atkins and modern-day Keto is that it's a modified approach that temporarily restricts fat consumption during Phase 1 to refocus the body on burning stored fat rather than the fat you consume.
Another important distinction is that Ideal Protein utilizes the tenets of a ketogenic diet while integrating education and support for creating a healthy lifestyle after the diet is over.
Changes Made to Ideal Protein Protocol
It's important to note that Ideal Protein brought some changes and refined this successful protocol in 2020 to make losing weight even easier. In the following details, we will be adhering to the new Ideal Protein protocol.
If you are researching Ideal Protein, make sure you are looking at the latest version of Ideal Protein, and its new 3-phase protocol.
In case you are wondering what changes were made to the Ideal Protein Diet, there have been quite a few and you'll notice them from the first glance.
1. Ideal Protein is Now 3 Phases
For starters, Ideal Protein has simplified its 4 – phase protocol to 3 phases. Along with that shift, Ideal Protein launched a revised Phase 1 diet menu as well as its guidelines.
If you are doing your research online, make sure the clinic that you are planning to partner with is following the new 3 phase protocol. After all, it's a great way to ensure your Ideal Protein clinic is up to speed on the newest advancements in weight loss and ensure that they truly focus on the program.
2. Ideal Protein Diet – New Phase 1 Food List
Along with consolidating Phases 3 & 4 into a new Phase 3 diet, Ideal Protein added new products and expanded the allowed foods list.
Ideal Protein has also reduced the allowance for whole protein allowed on Phase 1 from 8 ounces to 4 to 6 ounces. As a result, now you can lose weight faster, enjoy your weight loss journey, and transition faster.
Shirataki or Konjac noodles are newly added which do not have any digestible carbs while helping with hunger and satiety.

What Foods Do I Need to Avoid in Phase 1?
Anything outside the sheet! Download the Ideal Protein Phase 1 sheet.
Can I Workout During Phase 1?
Yes. But keep it low-intensity. We rather encourage light exercise only after the first 2 weeks on the protocol.
Ideal Protein is considered a low-calorie plan and Phase 1 is the stage where calorie intake is significantly reduced. Thus moderate to heavy exercise may lead to loss of lean muscle which contradicts the goal of the program.
Exercises such as body movements, light stretching, and gentle yoga are excellent options to go with. You can also follow the fitness program available on the IdealSmart app.
However, please keep a few things in mind when exercising:
- Do not get overly tired
- Supplements are a must!
- Keep well hydrated. You must increase your water intake if exercising.
Can Vegetarians or Vegans Follow the Ideal Protein?
Vegetarians can follow the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Protocol and can consume eggs, fish (if Pescatarian), or tofu during their evening meal for their whole protein. As an alternative, they can also have 2 Ideal Protein foods for dinner in replacement of their whole protein. Ensure you review the ingredient list on all boxes before purchasing them.
Strict vegans, who do not consume any animal proteins and animal by-products, such as dairy products, honey, and so on, do not qualify to follow the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Protocol due to the many dietary restrictions.

Supplements to be Taken in Ideal Protein Diet Phase 1
Micronutrients are vital ingredients necessary to support your body and its functions.
From maintaining muscle mass, energy production, and retaining hydration. Being on a diet does not decrease these demands.
For that reason, Ideal Protein Phase 1 requires a few mandatory supplements to provide all nutrients typically found in the foods that you will be restricting on the Ideal Protein protocol. The addition helps you achieve the minimum recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamins and minerals. It's a vital step and skipping it can actually slow your progress, costing you more in the long run.

What Makes Ideal Protein Products Special
Ideal Protein products are more than just packaged diet food. It sets itself apart from other partial meal replacement diets because of the bioavailability of nutrients and their design for taste and function.
Additionally, Ideal Protein products do not contain any Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's), dangerous trans fats, harmful preservatives like Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), or toxic, high-glycemic sweeteners like aspartame.
The Ideal Protein products are ranked on the chemical index for bioavailability and are between 96% – 297% bioavailable. What does this mean?
It means you obtain all of the nutrients for a fraction of the calories, allowing your body to metabolize and assimilate these vital nutrients easily.
Note that digestion of whole foods, such as eating a steak, you consume 100% of the calories but only 70% of the nutrients from what you are eating.
Ideal Protein Products Include Prebiotic Fiber
In addition to the benefits of maximizing absorption, Ideal Protein's product line has evolved in line with modern nutritional trends. Ideal Protein foods list has integrated products that are sweetened with nutritive sweeteners, such as stevia and also prebiotic fiber.
Prebiotic fibers support both optimal nutrients for the dieter and the microbiome.
Most people have heard a lot about the connections between probiotics (foods that enhance your good bacterial colonies in your intestinal tract) and health, mood, and weight but many aren't familiar with prebiotics.
Prebiotics, on the other hand, provide the ideal environment and nutritional sources to feed your good bacteria.
Prebiotics are a great fit for the Ideal Protein protocol because while they are technically carbohydrates, they are filled with fiber and non-digestible carbohydrates.
This fiber provides satiety to the dieter while feeding the good bacteria, helping it to flourish in the gut. In fact, several studies demonstrate that prebiotics play a more significant role in weight loss when compared to probiotics.
Prebiotic fiber can help absorb intestinal fat, supporting weight loss. Additionally, prebiotic fiber can slow the absorption of calories into the bloodstream.
Lastly, while prebiotic fiber provides sweetness, it does so without creating a glycemic impact, fitting in perfectly with the low carb, low GI ketogenic diet approach. These products support the whole-body health approach of the diet as well as creating appetizing, satiating yummy renditions of old favorites.
Two Categories of Ideal Protein Products: Restricted & Non-Restricted
Due to the low carb nature of Ideal Protein Phase 1 diet, dieters are recommended to monitor their net carbohydrates while on this phase. During Phase 1, dieters are recommended to aim between 25-45 grams of net carbohydrates per day.
The whole food lists of Ideal Protein diet can be broken into 2 categories – restricted and unrestricted (or non-restricted) foods.
To explain, Ideal Protein distinguishes between the two based on net carbohydrate content of the foods. Unrestricted Ideal Protein Products have 7 or fewer grams of net carbohydrates. On the other hand, products that are considered restricted in the diet have 8 or more grams of net carbohydrates.
To help you stay in ketosis, the diet limits you to 1 restricted item per day.
Restricted snacks included in Ideal Protein food list used to be all bars, chips, and treats. However, it has evolved and now very few of those items, except the bars, are restricted.
How did they do this?
Prebiotics!!

Believe it or not, outside of dieting, most people choose between 5-10 go-to meal ideas, which can lead to boredom.

Ideal Protein Diet Results
One of the most important things to point out about Ideal Protein is the weight loss results. This is how most of our clients come to us, by seeing someone they know follow Ideal Protein and visibly shrink in from of their eyes.
Ideal Protein's focus on fat loss over weight loss is one of the most important distinctions between Ideal Protein and other keto diets.
Due to the design of the diet and the focus on adequate-protein, dieters retain their muscle mass which maximizes their fat-burning potential. Visibly, the inch loss is so noticeable, even for those that don't share they are on a diet, people around them started asking what they are doing to lose weight.
The body fat loss is tracked weekly during coaching visits with the Ideal Protein Body Composition Analyzer, to ensure the dieter is losing mostly fat instead of sacrificing weight loss by losing muscle. For clients on the Ideal Protein Virtual Program, they typically use the IdealSmart scale, focusing on the trends of maintaining lean mass and losing fat.
The results speak for themselves – on average over the past decade our clients have averaged between 3-5 pounds lost per week for women and between 4-7 pounds per week for men.
Here are a few weight loss results of the clients who chose our Ideal Protein clinic in San Diego, CA.
Ideal Protein is More Than a Diet
The clinical utility of Ideal Protein is what sets it apart from a typical weight loss diet. The beauty of Ideal Protein protocol is that the most dramatic changes happen during Phase 1 and that goes for weight loss and improvements to lab values.
- Obesity : Obesity is truly the 21st Century epidemic. Today, more adults and children are plagued by being overweight and obese. 32.5% of Americans are overweight and nearly 40% are obese in 2021 with an alarming trend that has been increasing since the late 1970s. Many of today's health and social issues are exacerbated by this trend.
- Other conditions Ideal Protein addresses at their source:
- Metabolic Syndrome
- High Cholesterol (Hyperlipidemia)
- High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
- Insulin Resistance
- Type I Diabetes
- Type II Diabetes
- PCOS
- Fatty Liver
- Gout
Why Start Ideal Protein With BioIntelligent Wellness
Not all Ideal Protein clinics are created equally.
This is an important distinction and we recommend you interview your Ideal Protein clinic thoroughly before signing up to make sure you have an ideal experience.
At BioIntelligent Wellness, we realize that coaching is the most important aspect of the protocol and pride ourselves on creating value in every coaching visit and between.
This is why we don't charge our dieters a huge upfront cost and they pay for their coaching visits as they go.
Here are a few more reasons to consider working with BioIntelligent Wellness for your Ideal Protein Journey:
1. We Specialize in Nutrition
Our background sets us apart as our specialty is nutrition and improving health and happiness through dietary interventions.
2. We Are Experienced in Working with Dieters on Medications
We work with many dieters who are on medications for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol medications, and others. Moreover, several outside physicians specifically refer patients to our program for metabolic syndrome, fatty liver, gout, and PCOS based on the results we achieve with their patients.
3. We Can Customize Maintenance
Local dieters who successfully complete the protocol enjoy complimentary Resting Metabolic Rate testing as part of the new dieter special.
On successfully completing Ideal Protein Phase 1 & 2, an RMR testing is performed in the second or third week of Phase 3. We use the results for the purpose of customizing calories and macronutrient needs for maintenance.
This testing, while not required, helps dieters feel confident knowing exactly what they need, creating a foundation for their meal planning and helping to maintain their losses.
4. Flexible Hours Make Consistency Easy
With appointments offered 6 days a week and options for Sunday appointments, there is no schedule that we can't accommodate.
Flexibility is especially important for some of our clients while others need to have a dedicated timeslot that will support them to success.
Our coaches realize this importance and offer coaching appointments in the early mornings, during the day, after work, and even on the weekend – when most people can easily accommodate a reoccurring appointment.
We suggest before selecting an Ideal Protein clinic for weight loss (be in San Diego or anywhere else), clients determine if they're able to accommodate your busy lifestyle.
5. Ideal Protein Online Program
For the last 12 years, we have offered a virtual option for customized nutrition with our clients coming to us from across the US and the world.
Initially, our Ideal Protein online program was launched to accommodate our clients needing to travel frequently or that relocate but want to continue with their coach.
Not all Ideal Protein coaches and clinics administer the coaching aspect of the protocol in the same way.
6. Coaches Are Experienced Experts on Ideal Protein
Coaching offered in this program is one of the most important benefits and keys to your success.
While technically any diet can be DIY, without coaching or with inadequate coaching, dieters spend more time (and more money) on a diet and the same goes for Ideal Protein.
Moreover, DIY diets are less successful and dieters may have a difficult time maintaining their results.
In addition to the standardized training, our coaches participate in continuing education and working collaboration through BioIntelligent Wellness. Most of our coaches also maintain outside nutrition certifications and licenses, and they're also required to complete ongoing continuing education.
All of our Ideal Protein coaches work under the program director, whose sole focus is Ideal Protein. The program director monitors the overall progress of each dieter and offers insight to their coach on ways to quicken their success.
All coaches working with our clinics in San Diego have successfully completed Ideal Protein themselves and know exactly how it helps in weight loss. We believe while intellectual knowledge is crucial, the winning combination is knowledge and experience.
7. Nutrition Experience Outside of Ideal Protein
Ideal Protein's comprehensive training for coaches is great for consistency but sometimes leaves a gap in the way things are done.
BioIntelligent Wellness's coaches have advanced education in nutrition, most with nutrition certifications and licenses that extend beyond Ideal Protein's training.
8. Value from Every Visit
We are surprised hearing tales of some other clinics' management of their Ideal Protein program, particularly in terms of the coaching. Effective coaching extends beyond selling food and performing measurements on someone.
Our coaches focus on education, identifying and overcoming patterns, implementing lifestyle changes, and even the emotional aspects of weight gain and loss. Moreover, we create value out of every coaching session, which is why our dieters are happy to pay for their coaching as they go.
9. Support in Between Visits
You're on a diet 7 days a week and deserve to be supported electronically through text and email by your coach in-between visits.
Whether you need it or not, the option is there.
Sometimes, life happens and questions come up, and you need guidance or help to navigate situations that present themselves. Hence, our coaches have you covered and are there for you.
10. Bilingual Coaching
Spanish-speaking clients can opt to receive their coaching and support in their native language. Our bilingual Spanish coach, Rocio Delgado, is a native speaker and even holds a master's degree in public health.
Conclusion
Ideal Protein Phase 1 is truly a master tool for dieters trying to lose weight in a sustainable healthy manner. Owed to its genius strategy, you will lose fats fast and keep it off in the long run.
You can start your Ideal Protein journey right away by scheduling a complimentary consultation.
